One of the top reasons our dermis can look aged is due to an uneven skin tone, either through intrinsic (general aging) or extrinsic aging (photo-aging), hyperpigmentation can make our skin look rough and splotchy. Fade Lotion is an excellent complexion correcting agent and a uniform complexion will brighten the skin, making it appear more youthful.

Hyper (MORE) & Pigment (COLOR) Hyperpigmentation comes from an excess production of melanin, which is the pigment that gives our skin its color, and is produced by cells called melanocytes. There are two types of melanin, eumelanin and pheomelanin, are produced in the epidermal layer of the skin. Pheomelanin causes lighter skin tones and eumelanin is responsible for darker skin tones.

Trigger for hyperpigmentation: Sun exposure, hormonal changes, trauma to the skin (such as burns, popping pimples or scab picking), medications (can make the skin photosensitive), pregnancy, health conditions, scars, and genetics (freckles).

Types of hyperpigmentation: Melasma (known as the Mask of Pregnancy) is believed to be caused by hormonal changes and may develop during pregnancy and commonly shows up on the face or belly.  Sunspots, may also be referred to as Liver Spots or Solar Lentigenes, are very common and are related to excess sun exposure of face, backs of hands and forearms. Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation is a result of insult (injury) or inflammation to the skin, such as acne or burns.

Arctostaphylos Uva-Ursi Leaf Extract (Bearberry Extract): Derived from a red berry of a shrub, Bearberry Extract contains Arbutin which breaks down into hydroquinone and disrupts the enzyme that produces excess melanin in the skin. Works to reverse prior photo-aging damage as well prevent future excess melanin growth. Bearberry is also a powerful anti-oxidant which fights free radicals to protect against premature collagen and elastin breakdown, keeping your skin looking younger, longer.

Niacinamide:  An effective skin lightening compound that works by inhibiting melanosome transfer from melanocytes to keratinocytes, this will fade existing dark spots and prevent the occurrence of new ones. As form of vitamin B it is also very restorative and will nourish the cells and help them regenerate faster. It’s also an anti-inflammatory, properties that help to treat and prevent acne as well as help to decrease pore size by regulating sebum production.

Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract: Licorice is well known for its taste but it’s also an amazing UV battling ingredient. It helps to reduce hyperpigmentation from scarring, sun damage or hormonal imbalance by inhibiting tyrosinase, an enzyme that causes dark pigments. Licorice is an anti-inflammatory as well as an anti-oxidant, making it a wonderful ingredient to preserve collagen, battle and even prevent acne break outs.
